Tropical Paradise

Most of us aren't lucky enough to live in a tropical paradise, but that doesn't mean we cant make our home feel like we do! Decorating your home with a tropical feel creates a very relaxed fun and bright place, laid back and stress-free! and who doesn't want that! :)

 

You can bring real life tropical plants into your home or go for oversized tropical prints like banana leafs and greenery on wallpaper, fabric, cushion, bedheads, artwork.... the options are endless !
 

These fabulous larger-than-life prints are certainly make a statement. Just be sure that the other décor items in your room is kept subtle so it doesn't compete with this fabulous tropical theme.

Rugs Rule

A rug can change the feel and look of a room dramatically, but before you go ahead and make the purchase there are a few things you need to consider first...

Depending on the space its used for these layouts give guidance on what you should be looking for.

The fit
Rugs need to be in proportion to the room size and in keeping with your decor. A small rug in front of a large sofa will just look wrong.... As a general rule, treat your rug as an anchor point and be generous with it.

Zones
Rugs can also be used to define zones in your room, separating living from say the dining areas. Placing all the furniture on your rug and this will help differentiate zones.

Colours and Patterns
If your space is small its best to either choose light or soft neutral tones in your rug to make a room seem spacious, or deeper colours to create an intimate, more cosy feel. 

Patterned rugs are great for anchoring your room’s colour scheme, and unifying your space. Colourful and busy patterned rugs will also be slower in showing wear and tear in high traffic areas.

Cowhide rugs have been on trend this year.. you can choose from the traditional look, or now you can also get rugs dyed in different colours or patterns on them.

Interior Styles - Yeah Baby!

Do you love Retro? The bold geometric patterns and bold colours combined with straight lines gives an energetic feel reminiscent of the 60s and 70s.  For a modern version of retro use white as a base for your walls and floors and then accent your room with retro inspired designs, this look can then be easily and inexpensively changed when you want to try something new.

Keeping warm in Winter

Even though here in Tassie we are almost two-thirds of the way through winter I haven't got used to the cold weather yet... and to make things worse its not going to get warmer as soon as spring hits.. doesn't warm up till about November here! But that's what winter is all about, and really its not such a bad thing... I mean how nice is it to be able to snuggle up in a nice throw, with the heater cracking, a warm cup of tea, reading an interior design magazine... winter isn't so bad after all.

The Block Glasshouse - Guest Rooms & Study

Another week over and another room (or two!) revealed on The Block Glasshouse.  This time we got to see the guest room and study.  It is amazing what they can achieve in a week, not only the planning and organising but purchasing and styling of the rooms as well. 

They all did a marvellous job and the judges winners AND the blockhead voted winner were the same tea this week.... Dee & Darren!

They had a very small room to work with but they have done a beautiful job.  I do love the herringbone parquetry floor that we have just begun to see which they are doing throughout their apartment. Its so very chic!

Chris and Jennas reveal didn't get many good reviews from the judges but I think they did a great job. I love the timber feature bedhead, it softens the room from the grey and black bedding, furniture and artwork.

 Max and Karsten delivered a really nice room, although again the judges weren't huge fans of it.  I love their simplistic design with pops of colour.  The concrete floor is a modern touch with the elegant furniture and bedhead.

 The boys Shannon and Simon are a great design team, they have a really sleek look, very well thought out and designed.  Im loving the X O artwork. Not so sure on the velvet orange bedspread but it is definitely a talking point!  Overall a really great room.
 

I really like Michael and Carlene's style. Its a bit rustic and natural, but with modern inflections.  The exposed brickwork is such a nice element and Im loving the brass pendant lights! Very in vogue at the moment!!

The Block Glasshouse - Bathroom Reveal

I was super excited about the bathroom reveals last night on The Block Glasshouse! The week of bathroom renovation showed some really clever design choices and styles by the five couples and the final result didn't disappoint. I couldn't believe how classy and luxurious each of the bathrooms were, there are elements in each that I love.... and I cant even pick a favourite they were all so good!

Starting with the winning bathroom, Chris & Jenna...

I love the grey concrete tiles of the wall and floor with the feature wall of matt black hexagonal tiles. This goes so elegantly with the black tapware . I loooove black tapware for a bathroom.

Darren & Dee chose a simple yet very classy provincial style bathroom.  I think those floor tiles are beautiful, and the granite vanity adds glamour and sophistication. If you want to check out their product list go here.

The biggest bathroom belonged to Max and Karsten.  They designed a very high gloss fit out, my favourite item being the Salta pendant lights, which when on (photos don't show it) they look fabulous!  I also love that they used a different tile in wall niches, it's a great effect.

My favourite part of the boys, Shannon and Simons bathroom, was the stunning wall and floor tiles. Hexagonal tiles are certainly on trend at the moment but these elongated ones add some difference to this popular style... Im also a fan of the Issy vanity, its Scandinavian style timber warms the room and the beautiful curved crisp white basins flush with the front of the vanity show clever design.

 Michael and Carlene had some aspects of their bathroom I LOVED but some I didn't like so much.  Their feature wall of black and white herringbone tiles was my favourite! so elegant and intricate, it looked stunning (although the photos don't do it justice). I also loved their black fittings for the tape are.

What I didnt like so much was the shower up the stairs on the platform. It does look interesting but practically I wouldn't like this in my bathroom.
